The fastest powered aircraft ever flown remains the unmanned NASA X-43, which hit Mach 9.6, roughly 11,850 km/h, during a test flight in 2004 using a scramjet engine. No powered aircraft has officially reached Mach 10, though Lockheed Martin's rumored SR-72 successor is being developed with that target in mind. The gap between a commercial airliner cruising at Mach 0.8 and the X-43 at Mach 9.6 represents one of the widest performance ranges in any field of engineering.
