The case dates back to March 25, 2020, when Columbus police responded to a 911 call reporting that a toddler had drowned. Officers found Ja’Mir unresponsive inside the home and rushed him to a children’s hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy later determined the child had not drowned. Medical examiners ruled the death a homicide, concluding Ja’Mir died from blunt force injuries to his abdomen. Investigators also documented bruising on his face, neck and torso, while finding no evidence that water had obstructed his lungs. According to court records, Williams was caring for the boy while the child’s mother was away. Prosecutors alleged he repeatedly struck the toddler after the child had an accident in his diaper, causing the fatal injuries. Authorities said Williams initially told officers the boy drowned in the bathtub, but investigators quickly questioned that account as evidence emerged. Years later, Williams was located in Framingham, Massachusetts, after investigators tracked him down. The U.S. Marshals Service said officers recognized him despite an apparent attempt to disguise himself by wearing a wig. He was arrested and extradited to Ohio to face the charges.
