@jaqs_chronicles: Down Memory Lane 🔵❤️ A letter from Najjera ✍🏾 Wednesday, 5th August, 2026 In the early 2000's Kampala had a revolution in the food chain industry. It was the first time to have an international fast food chain Take Away restaurant after Nando's and that restaurant was called "Steers Debonairs" aka Steers. This was way before the coming of KFC, Pizza Hut, Java House and Cafe Java's aka CJ's. It was located on plot 14 Kampala Road, at the Entebbe Road bend where Bata shoe shop is currently situated. This place was not for the ordinary folk, it was for the corporates who worked in the high end places, city wannabes, civil servants, residents of leafy suburbs of Kololo, Nakasero and Muyenga who took there their Campus dates to dine and wine. It was at Steers where you could only rub shoulders with the creme' Dela creme' of Kampala's Urbanites. Once you entered there, you could only experience a top notch service you couldn't get anywhere with soothing soft music such as the one in the background. At the counter you would hear clients making orders of "King Steer Burgers", "Spicy chicken burger", "Hero Steak Roll", and the "Pork Mega Ribs Box", "Pizzas", not forgetting "the Old English Breakfast", "Milk Shakes", "Smoothies", the ambience was cozy while listening to tantalizing and serenading jazz music in the background. Not to be left out, I had long-term crush who had given me a hard time and the only place I thought of taking her to was "Steers". So, I saved my ka-money for days but the first thing I had to do was to go there alone to "acclimatize" myself with the place lest I would be embarrassed in front of her. I went there a day before our outing, asked for the menu with the help of the waitress who really took some time off to educate me what their meals on offer were pronounced. For insitance, I didn't know that Pizza was pronounced as "Pitissa"! So,when the day finally came, I called my date. I vividly remember it was a Saturday afternoon. She turned up stunning in a red dinner dress with high heals. Immediately the waitress approached us with the menu I didn't even waste my time, I only said to her "a "Pitissa" will do for me", I intimated with confidence. My date was taken aback and looked at me while rolling her beautiful angelic eyes in awe. While she took her time to read the menu like a manual book to make a choice!
