Jenny Moore :
Interviews go both ways. As an interviewer, I’m giving you my full attention for 30–60 minutes because I want to see your best. I expect the same in return.
If you’re playing with a toy, scrolling on your phone, or seem disengaged, it sends the message that this opportunity isn’t a priority. If you can’t stay present during the interview, it’s hard to feel confident you’ll stay focused on the job.
I understand accommodations. I have ADHD, PTSD, MDD, a history of alcoholism, and an eating disorder. I know people have different needs, whether that’s medication, a modified schedule, therapy appointments, or other reasonable accommodations. Those are different from appearing distracted or disengaged during an interview.
No matter your age, put the phone away, minimize distractions, and be present. Respect goes both ways, and an interview is your chance to show you’re invested in the opportunity.
