The following morning, snow was said to have covered part of Rome’s Esquiline Hill—an extraordinary sight in the heat of August. Pope Liberius traced the proposed church’s outline in the snow. The story was recorded centuries after the supposed event and cannot be verified historically. The feast officially commemorates the dedication of the Basilica of St Mary Major, rebuilt by Pope Sixtus III following the Council of Ephesus in 431. Today, St Mary Major is one of Rome’s four major papal basilicas.
