More about St Hormisdas: Born around 450, Hormisdas was married before entering the clergy and had a son who later became Pope Silverius. He was elected pope in 514, inheriting a Church divided by the Acacian Schism. The dispute concerned attempts to avoid a clear ruling about Christ’s human and divine natures. It had broken communion between Rome and Constantinople in 484 and survived years of unsuccessful negotiation. Hormisdas continued sending representatives and proposals despite repeated setbacks. Political circumstances changed when the sympathetic Emperor Justin I came to power, allowing negotiations to succeed. In 519, Patriarch John II of Constantinople accepted the Formula of Hormisdas, a declaration affirming the Council of Chalcedon. Communion was solemnly restored after thirty-five years of separation.
