@codeonesupport: We get asked these questions all the time. The honest answer would end the conversation. This one’s for the ones who carry it quietly. 🔗 Link in bio. Lifeline 13 11 14 (AU) · 741741 (US) · 116 123 (UK) #firstresponders #firefighter #police #paramedic #MentalHealth

My answer is always the same to "what's the worst thing you've ever seen?" An ambulatory 68yo couldn't sleep, so called an ambulance to take her to the hospital, wasnt having chest pain, no mobility issues, juat "couldn't sleep". Their response is always "what's so bad about that?" We weren't available when the dead 6 year old needed an ambulance, and had to wait 20 mins for one to get there from the next town over.

The worst thing I have seen isn't trauma or a hanging it's the people who have to deal with the death of that person. Like an old man crying because his wife has died or the wife who found her husband hanging. %hats the worst thing 😭

"What's the worst thing you've ever seen". I hate when I'm asked that. I don't want to talk about the things that kept me awake at night.

I had a couple of teenagers come up and ask "what happened?". I replied that a guy got beat up for being nosey and asking questions.

I'm fine to answer this question, but that doesn't mean it's chill to ask all of us. The main issue for me with "what's the worst thing you've ever seen?" is that it's being asked by an 11 year old and I'm not about to lie to someone, and it's gonna wreck Thanksgiving.

Maybe I’m different, but I honestly don’t mind answering those questions (as long as they’re asked respectfully and not by children). This is coming from someone who spent over 10 years on the frontline. If sharing some of what I’ve experienced helps people understand even just a little what first responders, paramedics, police, firefighters and emergency workers carry with them every day, then I’m happy to have that conversation. For many of us, those experiences don’t stay at work. They follow us home and can stay with us for years. If talking about them helps reduce the stigma around trauma or PTSD, then I think that’s a good thing. Sometimes understanding starts with simply asking the question

when people ask me that I always preface the answer with , please dont ask us that because it forces us to relive terrible memories and follow it with my answer because im comfortable talking about the awful things we see

Just had this discussion two weeks ago about how the public ask questions such as what is the worst thing they have seen. It is disrespectful and it is opening old wounds that took a long time to recover from. I wish public members would show more respect and stop asking these questions when they meet a fire fighter or paramedic.
