Just because Landry was getting stronger didn't mean he was out of the woods. 🐢💙 One of the biggest milestones in rehabilitation is getting a patient to eat on their own. Unfortunately, Landry wasn't there yet. Even though he was breathing without assistance, lifting his head, and beginning to move again, he still refused every fish or squid we offered him. For critically ill sea turtles, this is a huge concern. Their bodies are working incredibly hard to heal, but without adequate nutrition, they simply don't have the energy they need to recover. So while we continued offering Landry food every single day, we also had to support him in another way. One of the treatments we used was intravenous Intralipid. Intralipid is a sterile fat emulsion made up primarily of soybean oil, egg phospholipids, and glycerin. In veterinary and wildlife medicine, it's commonly used as a source of calories and essential fatty acids for patients that can't meet their nutritional needs by eating. Instead of relying on the digestive tract, these nutrients are delivered directly into the bloodstream, giving the body access to an important energy source while the patient recovers. It's important to understand that Intralipid isn't a replacement for food. It doesn't teach the digestive system to work again, and it doesn't provide every nutrient a sea turtle needs long term. Instead, it's a supportive therapy that helps bridge the gap while we're treating the underlying illness and waiting for the turtle's appetite to return. Recovery is often a balancing act. We had to continue offering Landry food every day while also providing enough nutritional support to give his body the best chance to heal. Sometimes, rehabilitation isn't about one dramatic breakthrough. Sometimes it's about helping a patient make it through one more day. P.S. No, we don't just force-feed every turtle.
