@tilscience: 98% of body parts are named after men and all female anatomy (except one) is named after men. Watch the full deep dive into this, the origins of the taboo of period blood and how we are now finally learning the POWER of period blood live on my YT channel now! The way we name women’s anatomy has been shaped by centuries of shame and male dominance. The anatomical term for vulva (pudendum) comes from the Latin word “pudere” which means “to be ashamed”. From Fallopian tubes to the G-spot, the impact of this naming is still weighing on women today. As a result, nearly 50% of women believe their genitalia look abnormal in some way. Medical gender bias runs deep. There’s now a push for medical schools to stop using medical eponyms (or a discovery etc named after a person) and instead use the anatomically accurate descriptions. We may not change medical terminology overnight but at least we can now recognize it & think twice about whose POV shaped the language we inherited. Not-so-fun fact: In the 19th century, significantly more mothers died of postpartum sepsis (childbed fever) during deliveries attended by doctors and medical students than during those attended by midwives. The reason was simple: doctors would often come straight from the autopsy room to the women in labor without washing their hands. Midwives did not perform autopsies and, furthermore, washed their hands before the delivery, so they did not introduce dirt or pathogens into the woman's body. It was not until 1847 that the Hungarian physician Ignaz Semmelweis "discovered" that simply washing one's hands in a chlorine solution could save a woman's life.
