@frequencyfield: Three thousand years ago someone in the Andes figured out how to make two shells beat against each other. In 2001 archaeologists found twenty conch horns in a stone gallery at Chavin de Huantar, carried there from the sea hundreds of kilometres away. Cut into mouthpieces, worn smooth by generations of hands. They still play. The lowest note any of them gives is 272 hertz. Blow two almost in tune and the passages fill with a slow pulse that neither horn is making on its own. Here is that lowest note on still water.
