I AM CONSTANTLY IN PAIN. YES, CONSTANTLY. EVERY SINGLE SECOND. This is one of the hardest things to explain about living with chronic illness and chronic pain. People often assume pain comes and goes. They imagine it's something that flares up for a little while and then settles down. They think there are moments when you're completely free from it. For many of us, there aren't. The pain is there when I wake up. It's there while I brush my teeth. It's there while I'm working. It's there while I'm laughing with my family. It's there while I'm making dinner. It's there while I'm trying to fall asleep. It never really leaves. The intensity changes. Some moments are more manageable than others. Some days are unbearable. But the pain itself is always there, quietly existing in the background of every conversation, every decision, every memory, and every moment of my life. That's something people don't always understand. Just because I'm smiling doesn't mean I'm comfortable. Just because I showed up doesn't mean I'm okay. Just because I managed to get through the day doesn't mean it didn't cost me everything I had. People see the version of me that's standing in front of them. They don't see what my nervous system is doing. They don't feel the burning nerve pain. They don't feel the aching joints. They don't feel the crushing fatigue that makes lifting my own body feel impossible. They don't feel the migraines, dizziness, muscle spasms, or the countless invisible symptoms that come with chronic illness. When I say,

They don't feel the crushing fatigue that makes lifting my own body feel impossible. They don't feel the migraines, dizziness, muscle spasms, or the countless invisible symptoms that come with chronic illness. When I say, "I'm fine," what I often mean is... "I'm surviving." Because after living with pain long enough, your definition of "fine" changes. Fine doesn't mean pain-free. Fine means I can still function today. Fine means I can hide it well enough that nobody asks questions. Fine means I haven't completely fallen apart... yet. Living with chronic pain means becoming incredibly good at pretending. Pretending you're listening when your brain is focused on pain. Pretending you're okay because you're tired of explaining. Pretending you have energy when you're running on empty. Pretending you're not scared about what tomorrow will bring. And over time, people begin to believe the mask. They assume if you're out of bed, you must be doing better. If you smiled, you must be feeling good. If you went to work, your pain can't be that bad. But the truth is... Many people with chronic pain do things at pain levels most healthy people couldn't imagine because life doesn't stop just because our bodies hurt. Bills still have to be paid. Families still need us. Responsibilities don't disappear. So we keep going. Not because it doesn't hurt... But because we don't always have another choice. If you're living with chronic illness and this feels familiar, I want you to know you're not alone. I know how exhausting it is to carry pain every second of every day. I know what it's like to feel misunderstood. I know what it's like to smile while your body is screaming. And if you've ever wondered whether anyone else understands... I do. Keep going. Not because it's easy. Not because the pain isn't real. But because every single day you keep showing up is proof of a strength that most people will never have to find. 🤍 #chronicpainawareness #chronicpainwarriors #chronicpain #SpoonieSupport #autoimmunediseaseawareness
