@yourmidwestauntie: If you are a new homeowner, furniture shopping can be a lot of pressure! You just bought a new home, and you want it to look its best. But listen, this is a process. If you can afford $20k on all brand new furniture that's great, but if you can't you're not alone. It took me a while to find my own esthetic, but I wanted to make sure I had peices that were practical and functional without breaking the bank. Thrifting helped me get the seating I need to host my family and friends. Learning how to paint and refinish furniture is another strategy for getting furniture you like without breaking the bank. I would say 85% of the furniture in our home is secondhand. We bought our couches new when we moved into our first apartment, and my husband bought our mattress right before we got together seven years ago. We recently got a new one through our warranty, so we will probably have the same style of mattress for another seven years. As fun as it is to decorate your home, don't go into debt for the perfect furniture set. It's just not worth it.
