@reformedacres: The fix seems obvious to us now, but we don't know what we didn't know! After days of not knowing how our newborn calf would make it through the heat, worrying, supplementing, and trying to figure out how to help him…we finally found what worked. Sometimes the "trick" to farming is just deciding that you'll do whatever it takes and never give up until the solution is found. 🐮💛 . . #milkcow #dairycows #farmlife #homesteading #babycow
You said, "I don't know that I want to have a calf in the summer again. 🤣🤣🤣

water tents is the best,It is a square fabric tent equipped with a perforated water pipe to keep the fabric wet; when the air hits the wet fabric, the temperature inside the tent drops significantly. I use this method for my birds—it is simple and inexpensive.

For future reference, you add water to where the big veins are near the surface of the skin. That will cool them down better than on their back.

remember when it comes to farm work there is no magic solution, what works for some of my cows dosent work for others.
you can set up a very simple walk through water system with pvc pipe

Maybe try some electrolytes in a bottle for him. (Ask the vet what kind) we had to tube our calf once, with this same situation. Also, give mama some molasses in her water and make sure she has a mineral block.

If you have a shed or barn it would be best to put him and Momma up under a fan where they would get a nice crossbreeze during the day and then do nighttime turn out

Is the milk cold?
Nice iced milk would help, if they will drink it?
You are likely already trying that 👍

There are so many #farmer and #cattlerancher on TikTok that I’m sure can help, and will hopefully see your post. I hope your calf is doing better.

i’m in 4-h and me and my family breed and have cattle and something that’s helped us with the heat is taking of some of there hair i would recommend trimming there hair in really heavy spots but you have to be careful because the hair protects their skin so just take off some in the heavy spots we have Scottish Highlands and this always helps

CLIP THE CALFS BACK that's what some farmers do with too much heat, you can also put up at hose with a soft spray thing so then they can cool themselves down when they're too hot same with mama
