As a kid, we got to watch whatever was on TV (CBBC, etc) at the time and if we didn’t like it, we could go play with toys, in the garden, etc..now that YouTube is more popular, kids have too much choice, which means they aren’t feeling bored of watching tv. My parents would have to ask us to come in from the garden, now parents have to beg their children to play outside 🤦🏻♀️😂

I’m a single mum and my son is 20 months old.. I’d give him screen time while I got jobs done..OMG never again. It’s banned, his behaviour was horrendous, he stopped playing with toys. The tantrums were next level. So completely agree!

I allow limited kids’ Netflix on the downstairs TV, but no iPads and no YouTube - I genuinely think even YouTube Kids is evil brain rot

I think we should bring back portable DVD players!! This will mean that they pick one/two dvds, and once the films finished that is it (unlike YouTube or Netflix where it’s just continuous), they don’t need to be monitored for content and aren’t just brain rot/high intensity

Banning youtube is the best thing we ever did! We do around 1 hour a day (broken up) of iPlayer (Bluey, Vida the Vet etc) but it must be on the big TV!

When you say ‘screen time’ do you mean all screens or just things like iPads specifically? So is she able to watch a film for example or do you also restrict her from this? X

When you say screen time- do you mean iPad or tv? We don’t allow are 3yr old ASD girlies to have an iPad (she’s never had one) and we’re quite strict with what’s on the TV like she just has Disney/ Pixar/ dreamwork films and low sensory tv shows xx

When you say screen free, do you mean that she has no access to screens at all (tablet & tv) or does she have some tv time please? X

If you do wanna give a kid screentime it should be a full show not YouTube shorts or TikTok as those are full of dopamine. Personally think if a child has additional needs it’s safer to avoid all screentime as someone who works with children and adults with disabilities

My sons 8, I’ve re-introduced him to a pad…he needs something to help regulate as he’s getting bigger and stronger the usual things just don’t work anymore, for some kids it’s an amazing tool and for others it’s not and that’s okay!

YouTube is toxic. The constant flicking from video to video and speeding up videos etc is was too overstimulating. We took my sons iPad away about 3 years ago. But a few months back we got him a portable dvd player and some DVDs that I knew where all low stimulating movies and shows, and slowely Introduced it and it was a game changer. He doesn’t actually look for it but loves getting it the odd evening for a treat. He knows he picks his dvd and watches it from start to finish and it’s over and that’s that.. I’m in control of what he’s watching, there’s no switching from video to video, adds, pops ups, sped up videos etc

For anyone that feels like they NEED a small amount of screen time, Sarah and duck on player is a great low stimulating program , but in the TV not an iPad!💗

Yes I started by removing you tube kids, and she still has iPad with just games on like lingo kids, sago mini world, toca boca games. And she has it but you tube is crazy but the games are good and we manage well and she can take or leave her iPad and still plays with toys

I absolutely agree with this ...I removed you tube from my girls iPad as she was scrolling through the reels and her behavior was awful ..she used to watch like family YouTubers and her behavior just went down hill ...she has an iPad but just with games on ..I removed it from my own phone as she would constantly ask for it so I just have you tube music now...she has autism/adhd xx

The problem is what they watch. My 3 year old only watches calm shows with muted colours, and not often, and she still plays all the time. Still loves her toys, still role plays and loves make believe, drawing, etc. 🤷🏻♀️

It’s the certain things they watch, try putting “caillou” on, it’s like an old sketch version and a very nice learning cartoon for kids and it’s not stimulating/bright colours/loud noises

YouTube has been banned in our house since the start of summer holidays. She never had open access to it, but we’d put it on the TV and she’d choose what she wanted us to put on. Her tantrums were terrible so we put a stop to it. She has Disney+ and that’s it and the amount she watches has reduced massively. I cannot fathom the positive difference it has made to her behaviour, it’s crazy!
