I’m 37. In Ct when I was in kindergarten it was a half day program and has since changed I’m not sure how many years ago after I got out of kindergarten. I remember specifically getting out of school mid day.

I'm 48! my kindergarten was half day in Illinois. I went in the afternoon.not vsure when but eventually because full time.

It used to be only half a day. People are getting confused. We used to have a morning class then it ends and then the afternoon class comes.

idk but when I was in Kindergarten in 1990 it was ALL DAY! Now, Head Start or PreK has a choice of half a day or a whole day! Kindergarten was a full day!

Kids have Gym, Art class, music class, recess, lunch, cool down time, rug time, they sing songs. Why are we acting like kids are sitting at a desk all day in lectures?

I went to kindergarten in the ‘90s, and it was all day. We were reading, writing, learning, and becoming independent. I think we’ve started underestimating what kids are capable of. Instead of encouraging independence and academic readiness, too many parents are quick to coddle them. Teachers are expected to accomplish in one school year what parents had five or six years to prepare their children for.

Pre K is only shorter by 25 minutes in my district! still a full day, but they get naps and two recess lol

Notice how kindergarten used to be 4 hours, include 1-2 recesses, and we learned a lot through educational playtime and there wasn’t a literacy crisis when we were little….

Because they’re only 5…. My daughter was reading at 4 years old. We practiced 15 minutes a day. Kids don’t need 8 hours of “learning” on paper. And then homework on top of it. They need hands on real life experiences. They learn through play. The US school system is outdated

Young kids learn best through PLAY. Play is learning. They should be playing in kindergarten.

I went to kindergarten in 1990 (so awhile ago) and it was a half day. We switched at lunch time. We learned but so much of it was through active play and in groups.

And then they’re mad about no naps. When I was in kindergarten we didn’t get naps either!!! And that was 20+ years ago 😂😭

Kindergarten should definitely only be about four hours a day, but being that parents have to work full-time it's more reasonable for them to stay longer but children that age get quickly overstimulated

Because half day kindergarten was a thing well into the 90’s a lot of areas. Kindergarten is supposed to be a transition time. I was in morning kindergarten.
