@mayinmidlife: The people who have the smoothest military transitions usually don't start planning after they retire. They start years before. With two years left, your focus should shift from planning to action. • Start researching companies you actually want to work for. • Attend hiring fairs and transition events, even if you're "just looking." • Update your résumé with measurable accomplishments, not military jargon. • Document every medical issue and keep up with your appointments. • Meet with a financial professional and understand what retirement or separation will actually look like. • Learn the VA disability claims process before you're under a deadline. Two years goes by faster than you think. Every step you take now gives your future self more options and a lot less stress. Your military career is ending. Your next chapter is already beginning. If you have more than two years left watch my five, four, and three year out videos. #MilitaryTransition #VeteranCommunity #MilitaryRetirement #VeteranBenefits #CareerTransition
Great advice. The problem is that transitioning soldiers greatly disregard the Transition Assistance Program. They sit there like they are being bothered by being asked to attend. I know this because I audited many TAP sessions.

Left the AF after 20 then worked for county schools for 23 and got a second retirement - it was a 10 month a year job - so got all the holidays off - best vision and medical and dental I ever had

Retired Army 1996. Went to TAP. Collected unemployment for about a year while getting acquainted back to civilian life. Then civil service and retired 2020. Now living large with no regrets

Happy for all that retires and everything works out. when i retired as a 1SG after 21 yrs. i was told not to attach my DD214 with my resume. And for state jobs done list all your education. That no one going to hire you showing all that because their afraid you'll take their jobs.

Also, check to see if any certifications are required for any job you want to do and get them before you discharge. For example, my brother worked x-ray in the Air Force and best thing he did was to get the RT (Radiology Technician) certification long before he got out, and I got my computer certifications before I retired and it was a great help.

Retired in 2018, great advice! I’d add to figure out what your priorities are. Is it location, money, time. Those things might pull at each other when the job hunt starts.
