A few months ago, I went to Mlolongo after receiving a distressing complaint from a mother whose child had allegedly been sexually abused by a Madrasa teacher. According to the child's parent, some community elders attempted to persuade the family to withdraw the case so that it could be resolved through traditional community discussions. However, the family refused and insisted on pursuing justice through the legal process. It was further alleged that after the case was reported, the Sheikh of the mosque helped the accused teacher evade arrest, after which he relocated. The matter remains under active police investigation. Today, I am deeply saddened to receive another similar case from Eastleigh. A Madrasa teacher is alleged to have sexually abused several young children, yet no meaningful action has been taken against him. Instead, it is alleged that he went on to marry the mother of one of the victims, raising concerns that this may have been an attempt to silence the matter and shield himself from accountability. These allegations must be investigated thoroughly, and due process must be followed. I am calling upon the relevant security agencies, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), the Ministry of Education, the Department of Children Services, and all other relevant authorities to urgently investigate these rampant allegations involving the abuse of children in some Madrasas and ensure that those found responsible are brought to justice. Child sexual abuse is a serious criminal offence and must never be handled through informal settlements or mediation. I also respectfully appeal to Muslim religious leaders, Sheikhs, mosque committees, and community elders: whenever such allegations are reported, please cooperate fully with law enforcement. Do not hide suspects, facilitate their escape, or discourage victims and their families from reporting these crimes. Protecting children and upholding justice are values shared by every faith, and anyone found guilty should be allowed to face the full force of the law. No religious institution should ever be used as a shield for criminals. The overwhelming majority of Madrasas and Muslim leaders serve their communities with integrity, and they too have an important role in helping identify and remove anyone who exploits children under the guise of religious teaching. As someone who has consistently spoken out against all forms of child abuse, I will personally follow up on both the Mlolongo and Eastleigh cases to ensure that investigations are conducted fairly, transparently, and without interference. I will continue engaging the relevant authorities until justice is served for every child affected. To every parent and guardian, I urge you not to remain silent. Report any form of child abuse immediately and never allow anyone to pressure you into settling such serious criminal offences outside the justice system. Our children are our greatest responsibility. They deserve safe places to learn, worship, and grow.
