OMG, this story reminds me about the little boy (or maybe a girl) who was given a rocking horse. the kid would ride the rocking horse and the father would ask the kid to pick a horse in the races. the more they rode the rocking horse they were able to pick the winner of the races. it was a short story I read in high school. I'll try to find the name & author.
