@elite.recruiter: If a company wants a high performer gone but doesn't want the lawsuit, the severance, or the messy optics, they rarely fire them. They make them leave on their own. I've sat close enough to these decisions to know exactly how it's run, and it almost always looks like this: 1️⃣ They start building a paper trail. Feedback that used to be a quick verbal note suddenly shows up in writing, documenting small things to justify a decision that's already been made. 2️⃣ They shrink your scope. Your best projects get handed to other people under the language of "bandwidth" or "development for the team," stripping you of the exact work that kept you visible. 3️⃣ They move the goalposts. Your targets shift, the criteria get vaguer, and somehow you can never quite land on "meeting expectations" no matter what you actually deliver. 4️⃣ They cut you out of the room. You stop getting invited to the meetings where things get decided, and you start hearing about changes after they've already happened. 5️⃣ They rewrite the story about you. The reviews that used to glow turn into "concerns," usually with no specifics you can actually push back on. 6️⃣ They isolate you from your allies. They signal to your peers that you're on the way out, and people start keeping their distance so it doesn't land on them too. 7️⃣ They make it unbearable enough that you quit. That's the entire point of the first six. If you resign, there's no severance, no claim, and nothing on them. They would always rather you walk than have to push you. If your stomach dropped reading that, hear me clearly. You're not imagining it and you're not suddenly bad at your job. This is a strategy, and the moment you can name it, you can protect yourself. Keep your own record, don't resign in a panic, get things in writing, and talk to someone who knows your rights before you make a single move. The people who come out of this intact are the ones who saw it for what it was early. #womenatwork #corporatelife

This is happening to me right now, and I don’t want to give them the satisfaction of breaking me, but as a retired and disabled vet with a lot of mental health issues, it is starting to get unbearable

This happened to me and I walked away for my mental health. It wasn’t worth staying and documenting it when I could leave and put my energy into something more productive. I know not everyone has that freedom though

Why push out a high performer? That’s what I don’t get. They’re often not more expensive.

Can confirm all of these signs before I quit from burnout 5 years ago. I stayed too long thinking I could fix it. Worst thing I could have done.

Why not respond to every write up you receive to create your own trail. You can't always receive correspondence and then keep quiet. However I'm still wandering why a boss would do that because an employee like that makes the whole department or organisation shine with their results. That is exactly why they were hired, to perform well for the organisation. There are various ways to appease or motivate and reward such an employee to keep performing their best. Pushing them out is not understandable.

if you find yourself in this situation. Document document. No verbal or private meetings. Put everything in an email. You can always let them know that constructive discrimination is a violation of an employees rights. No union go to an employment lawyer and pay to have the lawyer write a letter to them. They will instantly back off. Union not representing you in good faith go find an employment lawyer to write your manager a letter. Send a copy to HR! Best way to get them to leave you alone. Best money spent.

This is as serious as coercive control in intimate relationships - the workforce needs laws to prevent it.

Question is, what to do in that situation when one finds oneself right in the middle of it all.

my heart goes out to anyone experiencing work anxiety. As Counseling Psychologist the main complaint of my clients is work stress. I've created many tools to help people cope with this. Link in Bio. it gets better.

I’m in complete agreement with what’s said here. I would add that for Item #2, sometimes bosses will take the opposite approach and create a project that’s next to possible for you to complete (with time and resources available) and then add the results to your “list of failures.” And unfortunately, HR is often coaching these bosses on how to eliminate the “problem employee” with minimal liability.

I am retired now but this is exactly what happened to me and I saw it happen to others. So wrong but HR isn’t going against high level managers. They are not your friend. Sue them? Good luck with that.

Exactly what happened to me. After 25 years of service. Very quick way to erode trust. But I didn’t stay silent. Still here, still helping people. Didn’t let that experience change who I am for the worse. But my eyes are definitely open.
