@simonsinek: Many of us hold back an apology because we think saying sorry means admitting we were wrong. But that is incorrect. Accountability is not a verdict on who was right. It's simply acknowledging our words, our actions, and owning them. 🎧 Listen to the full episode of A Bit of Optimism featuring Alex Simon wherever you get your podcasts.
Accountability should also be truthful. Someone shouldn’t apologise for something they didn’t do or accept blame simply to keep the peace. A meaningful apology should reflect genuine responsibility, not responsibility that isn’t theirs.

I think the intention here is noble, but it can’t be a blanket way of thinking. Apologies and regret are so situational and subjective. I could see a lot of confusion coming out of this practice in real life.

Using the same analogy, you don't say sorry for rolling NEAR someone's foot because it made them FEEL like you might run them over.

But you are taking accountability for something you did wrong. It is wrong to hit someone with your wheelie bag, whether or not it was intentional.

I’m going to take this a step further. When someone tells us sorry, we should really with “Thank you”, rather than “It’s ok”

Accountability is not about losing the argument, it is about strengthening the relationship. The ability to reflect and take ownership is a sign of emotional maturity and leadership.

Tried to explain this concept to a narcissist using this exact analogy, and she was like “but what if they just put their foot there to make me run over it?” like girl it was already an analogy & you’re STILL grasping at straws so nothing is ever your fault 🙄

Wouldn’t there need to be some sort of regret involved? like in the wheel bag example - we’d say sorry cause we regret that happening, it was accidental yes, but we still caused it by not stopping the bag in time. I guess there’s a chance they put their foot in the way of the wheel and it was behind our field of vision but you’d still say sorry in a “sorry that happened to you” way.

An apology does not always mean, “I was wrong about everything.” Sometimes it means, “I recognise the impact of my actions, and I take responsibility for my part.”

It's a terrible analogy. You weren't wrong to run over their foot? Your point is fair but horrible analogy

Sean Callahan :
the hard part about saying sorry is when you genuinely mean it and the person you're apologizing to tells you to not say sorry if there's even a 1% chance that the mistake could happen again that sorry means you'll never do it again not that you're taking accountability
be careful with toxic people in your life

IMO the meaning behind what someone says and how it is interpreted is individual to the person saying or hearing those words which may be different, so can’t necessarily rely on a set / joint interpretation.

Simple man brain here.. and this is an issue I struggle with. This is the best analogy for this situation and I see it in a new light. Thank you!

Bad analogy. Because when pulling your wheelie bag into a person’s foot, you apologize for not exercising due care and caution. You’re apologizing for the negligence which caused the accident. If the other person wasn’t looking where they were going and jumped in front of you before you could stop your cart, you wouldn’t need to apologize.

No you’ve changed the definition of sorrry. Sorry is in itself an apology and by doing that you are admitting fault.

Personally, saying sorry means you feel bad about the situation. Saying I apologize, feels more like an accountability/ownership of it.

I'll add that not repeating the words or behavior make the apology matter. However, accountability also means NOT doing it again!
