Not to mention being a “weird girl” is only cool as long as you’re thin, pretty, usually white, and not disabled. And not TOO weird. You can be shy and awkward, but not socially inept or asocial. You can have unique interests, but not truly weird interests. You can have colored hair or a quirky style, but not too out of the norm, and you can’t be ugly. God forbid someone be ugly. There’s a very small definition of “weird” that’s actually regarded as “cool.” And it’s usually something you have to perform and/or be privileged to be able to achieve. Everyone wants to be the manic pixie dream girl type of weird, not truly strange. If that makes sense

In art school, there was one girl who was incredibly bashful. She dressed simply and wasn’t flashy or outwardly expressive. During critiques, she was often singled out because she created traditional Western-style art. I loved her work. It wasn’t my style, and mine wasn’t hers, but she had a level of precision and technical skill that no one else in our class could match. One day, our professor decided to completely tear her apart in front of everyone. It stopped feeling like a critique and started feeling like an attempt to humiliate her. I couldn’t sit there and watch it happen. I challenged every criticism he made because none of it had any merit. His comments weren’t constructive, they didn’t even make sense. It felt like he was trying to break her confidence, and I wasn’t willing to let that happen without speaking up. The bottom line is this: by policing what art is “supposed” to be, these people suppress genuine creativity. They don’t cultivate artists - they cultivate conformity, leaving a void where individual vision and creative courage should exist.
