Despite its fierce appearance, the warthog is generally shy and prefers to run rather than fight when threatened. It is easily recognized by the large tusks protruding from its mouth, facial warts, and the distinctive mane running along its back. One of its most interesting habits is kneeling on its front knees while grazing, and when danger approaches, it often sprints away with its tail standing straight up like a flag.
