The thing about seeing a whale in person isn’t just their size. It’s how they can move in sharp, sudden movements. We slo-mo big things all the time so we expect whales to be slow and lethargic. But when they breach, you see just how much power they really have.

I’ve gone whale watching, and even that doesn’t quite give you an idea of how big they are. I saw a whale breach while driving on the road quite a distance away from the water in Hawaii, and that is the biggest a whale has ever looked to me. Like a bit semi jumping out of the water

the aquarium near us used to have a life-size replica of a humpback whale I think. it had been there for decades and when we went there for my son's birthday we found out that they actually took it out and replaced it with a model of a sea turtle made entirely from recycled trash. which kudos for them for using the trash to make something but I kind of miss the whale

Humans have a really hard time visualizing scale without something known in the photo, and most boats are really far away when a whale breaches.

There use to be so much more of them, many species too. Before they were hunted for their oil back in the day. Wasn’t any laws to protect them. Wonder what culture they lost over the centuries.
