I think its because that overtime they started to consider outside of equestria. We see the introduction of creatures like dragons and anthro-cats etc. Since theyve always been there but ever since twilight created friendship harmony the world of equestria got more inclusive. Chairs were seen more and people started to adapt instead of using their mouth but aspects of themselves like wings to move things

on the umbrella thing- I think in season 2 Rarity has an umbrella attached to a saddle which practically doesn't make much sense but I think was so cute for a pony to use
