i put a cape on my first custom kit years ago. my thought process was that it broke up and obscured it's outline, making it a harder target to detect/notice from a distance.

the best possible reason is hiding the weak spots. why use some super high tech stuff when a simple cape does the trick? the greatest weakness of a mecha are its joints. hide them.
