I’m a high school teacher, and we have been sounding the alarm about this for years. Policies that force us to give students 50s for doing nothing, allowing students to turn in assignments for full credit no matter how late they are, allowing students to retake assessments over and over again, etc. are giving kids the false belief that wanting to pass is all they need to do to be given a passing grade.

one key thing is for the students to pre-read the notes /text BEFORE class: not to learn,but to allow their brain to be ready for the new ideas and words and start having places to put/organize the info as they hear it in lecture.

Ten years ago was 2016. Students who were 18-21 years old in 2016 were born 1995-1998. Those were Gen Z, ma’am. If we’re averaging out your “range” of 10-15 years ago, then you’re talking about the transitional generation known as Zillennials. Millennials don’t claim this energy. We worked out a$$es off.

I have had students who thought if you come to your college class every day, it’s an automatic C. They ask to retake exams and quizzes. They are surprised the lowest grade is 0 not 50%. They tell me they got straight As in HS and can’t understand why they are getting Bs and Cs. I talk about how to study regularly.

Those students passed high school because states have made graduation rates, not knowledge, how they measure the success of school in preparing students.

I always came to class and did the assignments. What I didn't understand was how to study and how to actually read/study the texts. Once i understood how to do that, my grades went up much higher.

Everyone talking about lower standards BUT this isn't new: high school was *easy*. I didn't need to do anything extra outside of class even to get mostly As. But getting to University and taking Engineering was a huge wake up call. To be clear I was in college in the early 00s - not recently. There was a specific physics course that made it ABUNDANTLY clear about the work required - a lot of people transferred univ after that class.

They didn't turn in the assignments or study for the tests, but they "worked really hard." 🤣🤣 You are a better person than I if you kept a straight face when they said it.....

As a college algebra instructor, same! I have students crashing out after the first test because they've never not made an A before. Many learn to adjust within that semester, but some take much longer. And as the years have gone by, students are less prepared than 10 years ago, so the adjustment is even more drastic.

3:1. Three hours of outside classroom work for every hour in class. This is what's needed, what I told the kids when I was an adjunct, and what I tell my actual kids now.

I teach English in college and I have to assign graded reading quizzes to get students to do any of the required readings outside of class. Now with AI being around, I have to have them take the quizzes in class on paper. I hate it here.

High school (and even middle school) classes assign homework. The idea of doing work outside the classroom is not new. How is it possible they didn’t understand that?

I got my kid an SAT prep class. I found out at the end, after there was no score improvement, that they didn’t even crack the book, let alone do any of the assignments because they “thought they were optional.” Why is this happening??

I was in college or grad school from 1997-2015 either part time or full time. At no point did I think that just showing up to class was enough ever. Unless this persons colleagues and them did not supply a syllabus, then what’s the excuse? The syllabus in every class I’ve ever took told you exactly how your grade was calculated.

How confident are you in that year range? I think this would have been a very unique experience 15 years ago but much less unique 10 years ago or a little less. It would be common now (and telling them that is an expectation gets pushback that the professor has unrealistic expectations). It has infiltrated residency and fellowship programs in the past couple years, and this year’s residents would have been freshmen in college about 10 years ago.
