If they see you slightly enjoying yourself while they're upset over something that has nothing to do with you, they'll then make it about you too.

I stopped singing. When I was very young my mom would say, “it’s okay if you’re not good at it, singing means you have a happy heart!” Then one day it was, “shut up, you sound like someone stepped on the cat’s tail.” I just…stopped singing. As it turns out, I can sing. Any dancing was seen as an attempt to gain a man’s attention. I was having a good time at a wedding once and she kept checking my drink for alcohol. There was none; I didn’t drink and everyone but her understood that. When there was no alcohol she decided I must be trying to seduce the dj. I was 15.

My parents ragefully scream fought my whole entire life regularly. In fourth grade I don’t even remember what my behavior was but I remember being sent to the counselor’s office because I was so emotional that day. And so I told my counselor about the scream fighting. And when I got home I got in trouble for telling the counselor.

my hot take is that not everyone should have kids; why are we ruining little kids lives long term because two people who are toxic decided to have sex? I grew up in a neglectful, drug using home and there is simply no reason everybody should be having children

I can't remember a single time when my entire family was happy, or my parents were ever happy or kind to one another.

we'd go out and pose for pictures but they'd throw that all away at the end of the night to fight. I started not trusting my happiness

my mom would get mad at me for not expressing visible excitement or happiness over recieving something or doing stuff I liked but it was because im not able to react in that way because growing up you were either bullied by them or yelled at by them so expressing emotions openly wasn't safe. even if I feel joy its very watered down and im not able to express it visibly

Being home alone was the only way to be free and silly. I had a yearly LOTR marathon as loud as I could in the summer while they worked because they would never do things I enjoyed with me.

my kids dance and sing around my living room and it gets on my fucking nerves because I wasn't allowed to do it. so I just put on my headphones and let my children exist.

My dad always believed that people are all evil, everybody has negative ulterior motives while pretending to be nice. Unfortunately that mentality got to me and now I'm learning to unlearn and rewire myself to think differently. It's hard though.

So true. I was watching tv and laughing happily as a child and my narcissistic parent thought I was laughing at them so they hit me. Hasn’t felt safe to be loudly joyous since.

You not only learn to suppress your pain, but your positivity, and start to numb yourself altogether and think survival is contingent on your lack of presence.

ugh yes so true. i remember being so uncomfortable expressing joy around them, even when they wanted me to. they'd insinuate that i was boring for not being more animated

whenever my dad would so something nice or be happy with me, there was guaranteed rage to come later about something. it was weird how transactional it felt. i was very very sick as a child, almost in organ failure and i was not treated well about it at all. thats really shaped who i am as a person now

Agree. Had crappy boomer parents. I'm an adult with a chronic illness who struggles to find enjoyment. When something good happens, I'm automatically expecting something bad to immediately follow.

My issue is I think it instilled in my mind that A) life is not safe and B) being an adult is going to be miserable
