When my daughter was seriously ill and tube fed, her pram doubled as a wheelchair because she had so much equipment, and was often attached to a feeding pump. I remember trying to get home from a really stressful appointment but the busses were full as it was rush hour. When one with space finally arrived, I got the pram on the bus, and the driver tried to refuse us access because there was an empty pushchair in the wheelchair space. Something inside me snapped and I got into a stand off with him and refused to get off the bus for 10 minutes until people started shouting and the driver gave up and made the woman fold her pushchair. Not my finest moment, I admit. But sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

Someone in a wheelchair can be at a bus stop through morning and afternoon and not get on the bus in time for a hospital appointment. Meaning we have to call and say we won't make. Then the hospital department discharges us from their care. I have been discharged from multiple departments and I cannot get to the GP surgery either. It's simple fold it or see the driver so he will print the thing for you to get on the next bus without paying. Before I became disabled I would look out the window at every stop to see if a WC was there, because I was in their space. I would fold or get off without being asked. WC users campaigned and legally fought for these spaces and ramps. They kindly said strollers could use it when not required by a WC. Before people used strollers and had to fold before boarding or wear a baby carrier. Where I live there is a larger space that fits multiple pushchairs and a small WC space but still I am prevented from travelling. This also causes people to loose their employment. Being disabled is the only minority group you can join at any time during your life. A lot of WC users are also in severe pain and / or unwell. Also I think the numbers will be higher because I've never made any complants about my local bus company and many other severely disabled and unwell people don't manage to do so either.

i don’t feel like these figures are correct, surely it’s way more. last year i had a ramp failure after getting on a bus tfl and i’ve seen other people on here talk about the same thing, and i’ve seen a lot of people talk about being refused access

think about it if able bodied people or buggies could only have 1 F*CKING SPACE on a bus, and we're refused because wheelchairs took them up, you would be livid parents need to fight the bus companies for buggy spaces, wheelchair users have shown you how to do it already

don't worry about getting on a bus you wouldn't have been able to get off anyway with half of the ramps not working properly
