At the same time, they may not meet the legal standard to be hospitalized against their will. It’s an incredibly difficult place for families to be. That was my experience with Wade. During periods when he was becoming unstable, we often didn’t live together. I would check on him, text him, and call him, but there wasn’t a legal way to force treatment simply because I knew he wasn’t doing well. Sometimes all you can do is wait until one of two things happens: either the person becomes an immediate danger to themselves or someone else and qualifies for an involuntary psychiatric hold, or they have a moment of clarity where they’re willing to accept help voluntarily. It’s a heartbreaking situation because the people who love them can often see what’s happening long before the law allows any intervention. That period of waiting can be frightening, but it’s a reality that many families caring for someone with severe mental illness experience.
