Take 20 people, Rs 10,000 each per month, one payout of Rs 200,000, everyone gets a turn over 20 months. Here's the part people miss: the pot never grows. Rs 200,000 goes in, Rs 200,000 comes out. A committee moves money between members. It doesn't create any. So what decides whether you win or lose? Only one thing: when your number comes. Get it in month one and you've received Rs 200,000 twenty months early, then you just pay instalments. That's effectively an interest-free loan, and you came out ahead. Get it last and you've funded everyone else for 20 months for free. Worse, inflation has been running the whole time. The Rs 10,000 you paid in month one doesn't buy in month twenty what it bought back then. Your purchasing power quietly dropped. Same Rs 10,000 a month, placed somewhere earning around 10% a year, would be roughly Rs 218,000 after 20 months. Against Rs 200,000 from the committee, that's about Rs 18,000 you didn't get. But I'm not saying committees are useless. They're excellent at one thing most of us are bad at: discipline. You know the instalment is due, so you spend more carefully. And when you need a lump sum for a wedding, fees, or an emergency, a committee delivers it. One real risk though: if a single person disappears mid-way, everyone takes the hit.
