Not still in the sense that nothing happens. Because everything happens. There are feeds and nappies and laundry and naps and little smiles and cuddles and trying to remember whether I actually ate lunch. But somehow, the world around you gets very quiet. You spend so much of your day caring for someone who can’t really tell you what they’re thinking. You can go hours without having a proper conversation with another adult. And even though you’re never technically alone, sometimes you feel incredibly alone. I think that’s one of the parts of motherhood I wasn’t prepared for. The loneliness isn’t always dramatic. Sometimes it’s just sitting on the couch during a contact nap and wishing you had someone to talk to. Sometimes it’s lying awake at night while the rest of the house is silent. Sometimes it’s scrolling your phone at 3am because you’re desperate to feel connected to another human being. And that’s when I started noticing the little lights. Mums awake all over the world. Some feeding their babies. Some rocking them. Some trying to settle another wake up. Some probably feeling exactly what I’m feeling. And suddenly my quiet little room didn’t feel quite so isolated. I love that motherhood can connect us in ways we never expected. A mum I’ve never met can be thousands of kilometres away, living a completely different life, with a completely different baby, and still somehow understand exactly what I’m feeling at 3am. She doesn’t need to know my whole story. She doesn’t need to give me advice. Sometimes just knowing she’s there is enough. Because motherhood can be beautiful. It can be funny and messy and exhausting and completely overwhelming. And it can also be lonely. If you’re in that quiet season today, I hope you remember that you’re not as alone as you feel. Somewhere, another mum is holding her baby too. And maybe she’s looking at the same little lights, feeling a little less alone because you’re there too. 💛 #newmom #momlife #postpartum #motherhood #momcommunity
