Incline walking on a treadmill is literally how they do cardiac stress tests for most people. It absolutely raises your heart rate.

*hides in the comments* I reached 10k steps today and I'm so proud of myself for it xD I know it's considered basic for so many people but 2 years ago I couldn't walk for more than 10 mins due to insane foot pain.

And yet it’s the most recommended workout in by healthcare providers. Anyone can do it, and as you get stronger you naturally walk farther and faster. It also doesn’t damage joints like other form of exercise, like running does. All movement is beneficial, we need to stop gate keeping what is considered exercise.

You can get to and through zone 2 with incline walking and I know this because my heart rate can get up to 160 or higher depending on how much incline and my speed.

You can’t say “for the majority of people” though. Check stats of who has health conditions that they shouldn’t get their HR over a certain number, or they have a type of arthritis that high impact can cause severe pain or autoimmune flares etc. walking per the American heart association is great and a great cardiovascular exercise for people to be in their zone 2-3.

From personal experience, my heart rate raised on my Fitbit to the yellow zone after I’d been walking 15+ minutes

walking is cardio it's just not a high intensity cardio, it's low impact. I'm tired of people getting this wrong. any exercise you do that elevates your heart rate above its resting rate is a form of cardio. you do get different levels of cardio

Yup :
Cardio… “any physical movement that raises your heart rate and makes you breathe harder for a set time”

Walking on treadmill on an incline will definitely raise heart rate

I feel like you’re having a hard time removing your personal biases from this conversation. Cardiovascular exercise is determined by the subject performing the movement, not the movement itself

You guys are missing the nuance of what she is saying. She is 100% correct. If you reach zone 2/3 it is cardio. If you don’t then its not cardio. Vast majority of people do not get to zone 2 walking. Walking is absolutely phenomenal and good for your health but for most it is not cardio.

If the activity gets you zone 2 it’s cardio and incline treadmills are literally perfect, incline till you find your zone2 bp and hold

Are we really just going in circles over the technicality of the terms? The treadmill is on an incline, and you’re walking. Nobody is saying “I’m gonna hike up this treadmill” good lawd

The American Heart Association recommends that it’s cardio if you’re walking at least 3 mph. Now granted you still have to measure for your own cardiovascular fitness you might have to adjust. I always recommend people wearing an Apple Watch. But the reality is a brisk walk if your heart rate is in zone is extremely healthy for weight loss, it’s healthy for the heart and it’s attainable for most people over the long-term. I’ve lost 160 pounds and I also work in the healthcare industry.

I think it depends on what your heart rate is when you’re walking. If I’m walking on a treadmill and in aerobic heart rate zone then it’s cardio.

Many sedentary people easily hit heart rate goals walking uphill. There isn't a standard definition of cardio. Fitness level matters; one person's warm-up is another person's workout. It's reasonable to admit that walking is cardio for some people, but not for more fit people. It is cardio until it isn't. This video isn't a good look.

You are so wrong. Incline walking keeps your heart rate up unlike regular walking

It absolutely is cardio. I averaged 138 bpm walking a 5K this weekend… and that includes the 12 minutes where I was done and forgot to stop my watch. Going for a light stroll isn’t cardio, but walking most certainly is.

To act as if hiking isn't a cardiovascular exercise is wrong. Now if you're talking some flat trail, maybe, but if you're talking an actual hike change in elevation
