Credit cards are great if you use them right. And the caveat of "if you use them right" cannot be understated. If you pay off the balance every month credit cards are awesome for your credit score. And a lot of them come with great perks and bonuses. But those bonuses are only good if you're paying it off every month. Once you start carrying a balance and paying 28% interest, they are no longer a good thing.
