We rescued a stray cat who could barely use her back legs and rushed her to the vet. After running several tests, this is what we learned. Her blood work showed ongoing inflammation. She also has anemia, which means her blood isn't carrying enough oxygen throughout her body. That's one of the reasons she's been so weak. Her hematocrit is currently 22.3%. If it ever drops below 18%, she may need a blood transfusion. She's also a little dehydrated. Her chemistry panel suggests long-term inflammation, and the vet believes it fits with Stage 2 chronic kidney disease. Her AST is slightly elevated, but together with her CK being about three times normal, it's much more likely that the increase is coming from muscle damage instead of liver problems. Her amylase is mildly elevated too, probably because of reduced kidney clearance and the stress her body has been under. The ultrasound found long-term changes in both kidneys, along with inflammation in her gallbladder. Right now, the vet's main concern is Stage 2 chronic kidney disease. Because damaged kidneys make less EPO, cats can develop anemia over time. Less oxygen reaches the muscles, which may explain the muscle damage and why her back legs have become so weak. The next step is to run a urinalysis, a UPC test, and an SDMA test for a more complete picture of her kidney health. Going forward, she'll need kidney-support supplements, lots of hydration, a prescription kidney diet, and regular checkups.
