@kellymasonry: We restore a lot of walls. This one we're not. A crack like this, combined with a forward lean, isn't a pointing problem — it's the wall telling you it's already lost the argument with the soil behind it. Repointing the face would look better for a season and change nothing structurally. So it comes out in its entirety. The reason it failed is the reason most brick retaining walls fail: no way to relieve water pressure. Soil holds water, water builds hydrostatic pressure against the back of the wall, and the wall goes where the pressure sends it. The replacement is built to release that pressure rather than resist it — perforated drain pipe at the base, clean gravel backfill, filter fabric so soil doesn't migrate in and clog the system, and weep holes to discharge. Finished in stucco instead of brick and capped in bluestone, which protects the top of the wall where water gets in first. The existing steps are being rebuilt with it: wider treads, a gentler rise, tied into the new wall. Half of masonry is repair. The other half is being honest about what isn't worth repairing. #kellymasonry #retainingwall #masonryrebuild #brickwork #drainage #bluestone #mainlinepa #hardscape #structuralrepair
