@bookswithamanda212: To reiterate, I don’t like respectability politics but I’m also quite grounded in reality so I understand how the average person operates and perceives certain personality types. Therefore, I think it’s the responsibility of people who are the face of a social movement, that is supposed to advance marginalized people, to have a level of awareness regarding their likeability. Because if you are so unlikeable and perceived as combative, obnoxious, untrustworthy, and/or unpleasant, people are going to disagree with your statements, even if fact, simply because they don’t like you. This is extremely reductive when the face of a social movement that is unlikeable has a large platform because now people will make jokes about, and make fun of, the truth that was stated because they view the messenger as a fool to not be taken serious. Idk that’s just me and I can be wrong but it’s worth noting I think #progressive #progressivism #socialmovement #advocacy #leadership

Funnily enough I think Samyra is a prime example for this…what she’s doing towards dismantling fatphobia is HEAVILY outweighed by her likeability. For the fact that a decent chunk of people finding her annoying, they find the movement she’s leading annoying by association, when it’s a VERY important conversation.

Lily tino is the surface level example, but sadly (coming from another commie) Madeline pendleton is the more complex example of this phenomenon

To an honest audience, all you need to be to be likeable is to just mean what you say and be consistent in your principles. Your "tribe" will find you and like you. The only "left-leaning" people that don't find someone like Bernie Sanders likeable, are those who haven't sorted out their own values and compass.

Fully agree and throwing this in: Unlikeable people should also not be therapists. It doesn’t make sense.

ive always said it. You cannot beat authenticity. Mamdani, Obama, Trump. they all have it. so no matter what propaganda u try and scream from the top of your lungs in opposition... you just cannot beat them. doesn't matter if ite the truth or u hate them.. those 3 are authentic and their respective movements got enhanced because of it.

I’ve had to catch myself doing this exact thing. I noticed how I would roll my eyes anytime a particular creator would come up on my FYP and immediately ruled out anything that they said. I’ve realized with time from hearing other creators talk about the same things that they were actually right but I still have them blocked for my own peace of mind because I get so irritated with how smug and obnoxious they are. It really turned me off.

This is very true, and it kneecaps people anyone who takes on the unenviable task of speaking truth to privilege and power. People feel justified in dismissing a person for their "tone" regardless of the topic.

I think a lot of people engage in discussion about these topics for their own personal satisfaction, whether it be "virtue signaling" or just the gratification they get from dunking on people they don't like. If your true, genuine priority is advocacy, then what she's saying shouldn't be controversial at all, because it's a factual statement. if you want to appeal to people, you must do so on their terms, not on your own. If you're unwilling to, or incapable of doing so, then you should ask yourself what your real motives are for engaging with these topics. For me one of the tell tale signs of a person like this is how quickly they fall back to "I shouldn't have to". As soon as I hear that phrase, it tells me a lot about their primary motives, which by extension explains their behavior.

I think that we should also remember and keep in mind that when it comes to politics, women are automatically perceived as not likable and women have to be likable while men do not.
