Indonesia is facing a worsening wildfire crisis as El Niño drives a prolonged dry season. More than 200,000 hectares have already burned this year, with nearly 95,000 hectares destroyed in July alone. Toxic smoke has spread into Malaysia, forcing hundreds of schools to close, while firefighters are being pushed to their limits. In Kalimantan, fires have even come within 100 metres of an orangutan rehabilitation centre housing more than 60 critically endangered orangutans. I can't bear to think of all the wildlife that will have perished.
