I've always had that feeling of debt to others. When they gave me affection, gifts or actions I felt that I had to return it urgently, I got stressed, and I felt guilty. And it's funny because I long for those things and I want love, but when they give it to me I feel that I don't deserve it at all besides not being used to receiving it. Then there is the part where I accept that no one is subject to a debt to me, but I always expect something from others and it really hits me with pride when they do not meet my expectations. That's why the last part you mention hits my psyche, because just today he was telling me, after receiving a gift: "Ok, it's okay to receive, if he gives it to you it's because he loves you." I still feel guilty, my friend scolded me when I made the suggestion to decline.eclinar.

Now it makes me wonder if I'm really an e4 or an e2, or just an e4 disintegrating into e2😭

i’ve had this question for a while, i’ve typed as e2 for a long time but the thing that makes me question it is that i dont give traditionally. i don’t spend all day every day helping others or trying to fix them in a traditional sense but i completely relate to everything else about it, and i try making my personality enjoyable to be around and kind of treat my presence within itself as a help because i usually provide the entertainment? i’m really getting lost on enneagram because none of the image types narrow down like me for a core but i know im heart triad for sure, i have 7 and 8 fixes. does this still sound like a 2?

when you stated "they internalized the belief that if they took care of others' needs, they would be loved in return", i remember something about the law of attraction or the teachings i would hear from parents that " if you want the world to be good to you, you'll have to be good yourself", could this type childhood be the same as what you mean?

[A thought I had:] A subtle E2 trap is turning humility into another achievement.
An E2 may think: “If I want to truly receive, I need to learn to be humble.” But this can become another expression of pride: “I will become someone who is humble, receptive, and able to surrender.” Humility becomes something to master and an identity to possess.
Real vulnerability is different.
The E2 who is genuinely vulnerable doesn’t think “I am being humble.” They experience something more immediate:
“I need you.”
“I want something from you.”
“I don’t know if you’ll accept me if I stop being useful.”
“I have to let you give to me without controlling the exchange.”
So the distinction is:
Humility can become an achievement of the ego. Vulnerability is exposing yourself without knowing what you will receive in return.
The E2 doesn’t need to become humble as another ideal. They need to tolerate needing, receiving, and being cared for without turning that into another way of being impressive, indispensable, or in control.
The truly vulnerable E2 doesn’t think “I am humble.”
They simply think:
“This is what I need—and I don’t know whether you’ll give it to me.”
