In 1899 Samuel Langhorne Clemens aka Mark Twain moved his family to a village in Sweden that nobody outside the country had heard of. He went there for one man. His daughter Jean had epilepsy. Twain had money, fame and access to every doctor in America and Europe, and none of them could help her. Then he heard about a Swede. Henrik Kellgren had no medical degree. He worked with his hands, along the nerves — no machines, no medicine. He took the cases other doctors had written off as incurable, and if you were no better in fourteen days, you paid nothing. The farm failed and a bank crash took the rest, so he signed up for the French Foreign Legion in Algeria. He stopped in Germany on the way to deliver a message for his landlord, walked into a stranger’s clinic, and never came out. And he treated the poor for nothing — same rooms, same hands, same terms. A king waited his turn like anyone else. After he died, money was raised in London for a hospital in his name. He never fell. Patients queued until the day he died at 78.
