@elorm_alek: 1951, Accra. Outside a polling station, long lines of Gold Coast citizens wait to vote, the first election anywhere in Africa where everyone gets a ballot, not just property owners in the towns. The Governor and his wife, Sir Charles and Lady Arden-Clarke, arrive to inspect the polling stations themselves, moving through the crowds as voters file in and out. But not far away, at Fort James prison, sits the man whose name is plastered across "Vote CPP" signs all over the city, and he isn't even free to cast a vote for himself. Kwame Nkrumah is serving a sentence for organizing strikes against colonial rule. His party runs anyway. Deputy Chairman K.A. Gbedemah has been running the entire CPP campaign from outside while Nkrumah directs what he can from behind bars. Chiefs like Ga Manche Nii Tackie Komey II look on as ordinary people, women with babies slung on their backs, men in queues stretching down the street, step into the booths, mark their crosses, and drop their ballots into the box. By nightfall, the count is in. The CPP sweeps 34 of the 38 elected seats. Candidate T. Hutton Mills wins his own seat and bows to a cheering crowd from the balcony. Days later, Governor Arden-Clarke does something almost unthinkable for a colonial administrator, he walks into Fort James, releases Nkrumah, and asks the prisoner to come lead the government.
