Simply saying “No” in this context, to me, doesn’t fully address the issue. The way you say “no” to a friend is totally different from how you would say it to an elderly person. From my point of view, saying “no” without providing a little context is often considered impolite. A better response would be something like: “Sorry, Ma. I would have loved to help, but I’m in a hurry.” This kind of response acknowledges the person while still setting a boundary. That way, it softens the refusal and doesn’t come across as rude, dismissive, or disrespectful. Mind you, culture is a way of life. In our society it plays a huge role. Knowing how to say “no” to an elderly person without sounding dismissive or disrespectful is important, especially in cultures where respect for elders is highly valued.
