@thecorporatescapee: You're not letting anybody down when you take care of yourself! The company let the team down with their unwillingness to hire enough people‼️ #corporatelife #corporatehumor #truth #worklifebalance #relateable
I’m stuck with two scenarios for this. Here’s why….. if I hire an extra staff member to have an extra body to cover time off better, work loads better, etc…. Then I can’t pay the positions more…… If I hire just enough staff to do the job, and I am able to pay all the employees above the market for the position by 20-30% more BUT I can’t always cover time off as nicely and maybe can’t even approve more than one person off on the same day sometimes pto is “denied” due to overlap….. which is preferred by the employee? Pay more, less coverage. Pay base, and hire another person for coverage?

I have for years tried to explain this to my husband who literally goes into work sick, throwing up before, running a fever...he feels "guilty" taking any time off for anything, because he says it's not fair to stick the other two guys with the work while he's gone. My brother took his life in January 2025 and my husband's boss said he could only have one day, while we needed to travel from PA to TN to id him and make arrangements for a forensic autopsy and final arrangements. One day. He used all three weeks of his PTO instead.

I asked for a long weekend off. manager said no, just because. I found another position and will be gone less than a month after she said no. she should have given it to me

Then there's all the work left for you to, because while you were out they didn't know how to do it or couldn't be bothered to do it....

This is a good point. Yet at the same time, taking time off is more of a concern to me, bc I know I’ve got a mountain of shit waiting for me. So what’s worse, not taking time and keeping the flow, or taking time and having the stress of digging out for weeks afterwards

It's definitely a team work issue. Because if you were a team, someone would cover for you.... you want people to just sit around waiting for a phone call that someone called in... that only works for ER workers and substitute teachers.

not uncommon to hear my colleagues report at the end of the workday that “they are sorry. they just took a few minutes to eat dinner but will be back online later tonight”

It’s a benefit use it. I have a Staff of 7 direct reports that have 120 direct reports. Nobody and I mean nobody denies anyones PTO. If we can’t manage around PTO we have no business being Managers. I refuse deny a benefit provided by the company to anyone.
