@travelwithnoon: The man who invented Miami Beach invented Montauk too. Both of them. He died with almost nothing. By 1925 Carl Fisher was worth as much as a hundred million dollars, all of it made from a mangrove swamp he pumped up off the floor of Biscayne Bay. So he bought the other end of the country and did it again. Nearly ten thousand acres at the far tip of Long Island for two point six million dollars, the largest land deal the East End had ever seen. Montauk was almost completely empty. Eight hundred workers laid the downtown street grid people still drive on today. He built a Tudor hotel, a six story tower, a yacht club, a polo field and a racetrack, and planned a city for a hundred and forty thousand people to beat Newport and Palm Beach. Then he did the strangest thing of his life. In Florida he had made land out of water. In Montauk he did the opposite. He dynamited the shoreline, opened the biggest freshwater lake on Long Island straight into the Atlantic, and turned it into a harbor. He was two years from finishing when the 1926 hurricane flattened Miami Beach and drained the money Montauk needed. The crash of 1929 took the rest. By 1932 it was all in receivership. Both towns survived him. Miami Beach filled with pastel hotels through the depression and became South Beach. In Montauk his hotel sat abandoned for decades and locals called his empty tower the White Elephant. But the harbor he blew open became the largest fishing port in New York, and the median home there now sells for two point three million dollars. Fisher spent his last years running a fishing club in Key Largo for men who were not rich. He died in 1939 in a small cottage on Miami Beach, the island he made out of the sea. He built two of the most expensive coastlines in America. He kept neither one. Share this with the person you know who can never just take the win. Uninfluenceable :
He didn’t invent Montauk that is ridiculous. He tried building it up like he did in Miami and failed.

The lake he blew open wasn't called Lake Montauk. It was Lake Wyandanch, a landlocked freshwater pond and the largest lake on Long Island. Fisher dynamited a channel through the shoreline to join it to the sea, then renamed it after the town he was building. The name on the map today is his.

That fishing cottage in Key Largo is called The Caribbean Club. Great place for a drink with a view.

I used to love going out to Montauk. We used to go out every memorial day weekend and stay, but Long Island got so crowded that it’s ridiculous to even go out there anymore.

Montauk Manor was designed by Schultze and Weaver, the same architects behind the Waldorf Astoria and The Breakers in Palm Beach. Fisher wasn't building a seaside inn. He was importing Palm Beach to Long Island, architects included.

😇 Dear God, when I reflect on Your power and on Your mightiness, confidence rises within me. Challenges and stressful situations may try to bring me down but I take courage as I dwell on the fact that since You are for me, nothing can ever stand against me and prevail. Thank you for this boldness, Lord. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
