I see so many times with people who feel stuck that they do one of two things; they either ignore the reality because looking at your finances is too stressful or they believe that God will do all of the work and pull them out even if they are/have made unwise financial choices. To address the first; I promise knowing where you are financially, even if it’s not good right now, brings so much more peace then not knowing. To address the second; yes, God provides and does pull us out sometimes supernaturally. However, more often than not he sees that facing the consequences of our own actions is better for us long term than a quick fix. So submit yourself to the Lord and humbly ask for forgiveness and help to move forward with your next steps. #2 Get on the same page with your spouse if you have one (pray if they are not ready) and get someone in your corner to help you. This is why I speak so much on being involved with a local church because that is an excellent way to get connected with a pastor who can be a third party voice in the situation. Whoever you choose to help you, whether a pastor or financial educator, ensure you are completely honest with your situation. You are only hurting yourself if you are sugar coating your spending habits or not being forthcoming with where your debt is. #3 Get on a budget and strategize a plan out, relying on the Lord to provide and direct. For increasing income, I love the phrase “God can’t steer a parked car.” No it isn’t scripture, but it’s a good illustration of what we should be doing if we are stuck. Sometimes we just need to start moving towards the solution and wait for God to open and close doors. Is it a new job? Is it a move across country? Or maybe more simply just a call to work extra hours. Whatever the call, get a plan in place (with your spouse fully onboard). For managing bills, get on a written budget today! Find out how much your bills are and how much you are overspending. Budget BEFORE you get your paycheck, not after. And finally, rely on God for strength and wisdom through the Spirit and His word.
