An Important Note About the Arabic Letter Ḍād (ض)
The letter Ḍād (ض) is articulated by placing the side of the tongue (ḥāfat al-lisān) against the gums of the upper back five molars (the premolars, molars, and wisdom teeth). It may be pronounced using the right side of the tongue, the left side, or both sides. All three methods are correct, although using the left side is generally easier for most people.
Many people are confused about whether the sound of Ḍād should resemble the letter Dāl (د) or something else. Keep in mind that when pronouncing Dāl, the tip of the tongue touches the roots of the upper front incisors. In contrast, when pronouncing Ḍād, the tip of the tongue does not touch that area. Instead, the side of the tongue makes contact with the gums of the upper back five molars.
At the beginning, do not focus too much on how the sound comes out. Instead, concentrate on producing the letter from its correct point of articulation (makhraj). Practice by placing the side of the tongue against the gums of the upper back five molars and pronouncing Ḍād. Whatever the sound may seem like at first, do not worry about it. Just make sure that the tip of your tongue does not touch the front teeth.
Continue practicing this point of articulation repeatedly. In shāʾ Allāh, once you begin pronouncing Ḍād from its correct makhraj, you will naturally recognize what its proper sound should be. Therefore, in the beginning, focus on correcting the makhraj rather than the sound itself. When the makhraj is correct, the sound will, In shāʾ Allāh, gradually become correct as well.
