The jugular veins are major blood vessels in the neck responsible for draining deoxygenated blood from the head and neck back to the heart. There are two main types: the internal jugular vein and the external jugular vein. The internal jugular vein is the larger of the two and runs alongside the carotid artery and vagus nerve within the carotid sheath. It originates at the base of the skull, collects blood from the brain, face, and neck, and descends down the neck to join the subclavian vein, eventually forming the brachiocephalic vein. The external jugular vein is more superficial and can often be seen just beneath the skin in the neck. It collects blood mainly from the outer structures of the head and deep parts of the face and then drains into the subclavian vein. There is also an anterior jugular vein, which is smaller and varies in size and presence from person to person, often draining into the external jugular or directly into the subclavian. These veins play a vital role in maintaining venous return from the brain and upper body to the heart. Clinically, the jugular veins are significant in assessing central venous pressure, particularly the internal jugular, which can reflect right atrial pressure. #osteopathy #anatomy #osteopath #manualtherapy
