Gwayne was the perfect catalyst character for Cole but they didn’t even try. Criston comes from poverty and his only possession was his honor which he spent years self loathing and blaming Rhaenyra for why it shattered, not himself. Scenes where Gwayne calls him out for Alicent and later for the common girl who was SA it should’ve slowly pushed Cole to begin to seek what he lost as Gwayne should’ve convinced him to execute the soldier. This isn’t redemption just desperation and regret as his time with Gwayne could’ve made Cole want to die with honor and not be remembered as just a traitor creating a more dramatic scene where he’s challenging 3 leaders in single combat for the sake of his men as he wants to die honorably and be remembered in a song as he ties Alicent’s token on his sword but they drop the iconic line and kill Cole with arrows anticlimactically it’s tragic but deserved.
