This is Martha Reeves. Legendary Motown singer from Martha and the Vandellas. She’s 85. Her age probably contributed to the shakiness and very heavy vibrato but I don’t think the extraordinary sound of that performance can simply be put down to “she can’t sing”. The combination of her voice, incompatible backing vocals, different pitches, timing problems and inadequate monitoring produced something far worse than any one of the three singers would probably have sounded alone. In fact, the rehearsal footage makes me wonder why the organisers didn’t simply have Reeves perform it solo once it was obvious the arrangement wasn’t working. For you to say deport her is ludicrous. Let’s have some respect for her 60 year singing career. She recorded some of Motown’s most enduring songs, including Dancing in the Street (that you’ve probably danced to many times. Or maybe not because you lack joy). She was I nducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 with the Vandellas. They were only the second female group to receive the honour. She earned Motown’s first Grammy nomination for Heat Wave in 1964. She received her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2024. Was elected to the Detroit City Council, serving from 2005–2009 — so she had an entirely separate career in public service after becoming a music legend. She has also been inducted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, Vocal Group Hall of Fame and Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame, among numerous other honours. So yes, she’s old and not as good as she used to be but who is? Give her some grace!
