@racheljoy356: Replying to @🇨🇦 Sorry it's Seb 🇨🇦 The real reason behind Astarion’s disapproval of good acts through the first half of the game, because some people seem to boil it down to him being pure evil for the love of the game instead of looking a little deeper. (Which isn’t to say he doesn’t also love violent chaos here and there - no, this is Mister “I do appreciate a good den of debauchery,” after all, but rather that it’s important to think deeper about these things.) Hypocritical, absolutely, but it unfortunately does make sense. Also a little Wyll Ravengard appreciation on the side. #astarion #bg3 #baldursgate3 #fandom #gaming

astarion is very much spiteful in some moments, it's like "well nobody saved me, why should we save them" and I do get it, but it's also just him being an ass. not an excuse but an explanation basically

unfortunately, he doesn't think anybody else deserves help because he never got it. He tells you this pretty bluntly.

I read a fanfic once where he said something like “I can’t accept that there are selfless heroes out there. Because if people like you have always existed, then it means that I wasn’t worth saving.” And that hit me hard. He prayed to all the gods and none of them helped. He prowled the streets for 200 years, probably looking starved, and no one thought to look into that. No one helped. And now suddenly he’s traveling with Tav, who wants to help anyone and everyone? No. That isn’t fair. Why should everyone get help except him? It probably hurts every time someone else gets helped, thinking on his centuries of torture with no help at all.

He also spent two hundred years being enslaved, trafficked and SAed and that is close to three human lifetimes worth of abuse - so much so that by the start of the game, he knows nothing but pain and suffering. It is why he is so bitter and angry whenever a Tav/Durge/Companion goes out of their way to be righteous and slay any evildoers. He kept waiting for someone to be that kind of hero to come and rescue him throughout those 200 years of nonstop torture - and in the end no hero came to save him. Instead, he has to do all the work himself and rely on the illithid tadpole to cling to his freedom while also dealing with his fear that he will be betrayed and killed or handed off to a monster hunter. So of course he will be a sadistic monster, because he was conditioned and had his mind/body broken whenever he showed any signs of either kindness or mercy.

Astarion and Karlach are vastly different sides of the same situation and people seem to not understand that. lets also note that while Astarion does not say it happened to him, it is shown that Cazador’s mentor killed people who tried to help Cazador and it would not shock me if he did the same to his own spawn and that mindset would absolutely help Astarion’s hypocrisy- being kind and helpful can be used against him, so why risk his neck? And he sees Tav risking their neck for others, there might be some fear or concern in there for them - especially if he likes them enough. He is very aware Cazador could just show up if he was determined enough, what will happen to the camp if Cazador finds out his wayward spawn is not coming back because these people are helping him keep his freedom?

The fact that Astarion is redeemable at ALL after everything he went through should be proof enough that he is, on some levels, a better person than a lot of people

honestly what drove me away from the bg3 fandom is the lack of reading comprehension - what youre saying in this video is OBVIOUS TEXT, and so many people just cannot comprehend it for some reason??

Some people end up losing their empathy because they become bitter. Bitter because they start thinking, « Why should I help others when no one was there for me? » I think it reflects an interesting social phenomenon. But what fascinates me even more is seeing that this bitterness can sometimes give way to kindness. As people come to realize that, even after going through hell, the sun can eventually shine again

genuinely because he's racist and doesnt see gnomes as real people. If Tav asks him to not feed on people he'll say something along the lines of "ok fine, no humans, elves, etc. But not even gnomes? kobolds? they're barely people!"

I feel like not enough people talk about it, but Astarion is looking for another “master” in the first two acts of the game. His mind is so wrapped around what happened to him that freedom, whether his own or someone else’s, is out of the question

this is only tangentially related but this is eye opening for me. I'm reading ACOTAR right now and can't find a single likeable thing about any of the characters... but maybe 500 years of trauma will make someone unlikeable? I only have 30 years and im unbearable. If I was Astarion I would make Cazador look nice once I got free

i also read it as him being piss terrified of drawing attention and potentially dying as a result of your heroics. like you ARE rocking the boat in the middle of some very dangerous cultists on 3 sides and lava on the other. hes very focused on self preservation on isnt standing on principles

I relate to Astarion heavily for this reason. I grew up in a cult, was abused and failed by people who were supposed to protect me. up until I was 24, I was repulsed by seeing acts of kindness and people who were helped instead of me, especially if they experienced similar things. it wasn't because I was inherently hateful, I just couldn't cope with being a person that fell through the gaps. I cannot imagine suffering for 200 YEARS!

also seducing people the whole time means he couldn’t even really be vocal about how miserable he was throughout all of it, this is probably one of the first times he can even properly bitch about all this outside of talking to the other spawn

He later tells you "No one ever looked out for me. No one ever said a kind thing to me." No one helped him so he doesn't want to help others. He even mentiones later that he tried praying to all the gods and none of them answered.
