as a fellow healthcare worker. Their spouse should always be allowed IF patient wants them there. Telling them to leave & making patient now uncomfortable or even more anxious is not worth it for 15 minutes. Spouse stays, put them on disclosure list and it’s even more so allowed.

Fellow Sonographer here. I give patients the option to bring one visitor over the age of 18 back and they stay through the exam. A lot of the time, the visitor has a much better grasp on the patient’s health history. Only caveat: if the visitor makes excessive noise, they’re asked to pipe down or leave. I don’t make enough money to entertain and I need eyes and ears to do my job well.

my husband comes back for my OB ultrasounds and came back for my gallbladder ultrasounds. I get OB is different, but if they would have told us he couldn't be there for my gallbladder ultrasound, I simply would have requested a new monographs and/or went somewhere else. nobody is telling me I can't have my safe person when I'm about to get bad news no matter what

Even if it’s uncomfortable to have a second person in the room questioning you, patients have a right to have a support system / advocate in the room if they so wish. I don’t trust providers who are weird about letting other people in the room specially because i have met many great providers who have made it clear it’s always the patient’s choise

As an ultrasound tech for 11 years you all seem to forget that this is the PATIENTS exam and we have valid reasons to ONLY allow the patient if over the age of 18. This isn’t for entertainment purposes , this is for diagnostic medical purposes.

I could not care less who my patient wants in the room with them. It’s their medical care. Whatever makes them most comfortable is what matters. Unless my patient asks me to kick them out, I’m not going to.

If I have someone with me and I’m comfortable enough for them to help me undress, then I’m comfortable enough for them to see my sonogram 🤷♀️

no because i’ve had ultrasounds (not for a baby) and they wouldn’t let my husband back there with me and it was terrible. i had nobody there with me while i was getting some of the worst treatment of my life. i was scared and at that point freaking out because of how rude and aggressive all of the nurses and the sonographer was to me and if i have to go to the ER again and they don’t even allow my husband back there with me i will be leaving and going somewhere else because i will not be tolerating that again.

As a pt, when you book a scan, sonograph, etc ask questions. Ask if you can have someone there with you, ask any questions you may have and if the answers don’t fit your needs, go somewhere else. You have the right to decline anything. Do what is best for you and don’t listen to people who say you’re weird or crazy for needing something different.

I hope you let them know before their appointment. I would be requesting a different provider. Thankful that my husband was there with me for my echo and OB appts and I've been there for my husband's multiple ultrasounds including paracentesis, IV placement, ect. Neither of us has ever been asked to leave the room.

why do people want them gone? having a person with me is one of the few things that stops me getting violent due to past trauma (and it's in my notes) but it still becomes basically a full blown argument untill they read my notes... just, what benefit is there from them being gone?
